Not every design classic needs a display shelf. The Duralex Picardie tumbler has a more persuasive place: on the breakfast table, beside a notebook, or stacked neatly in a kitchen cupboard. Its recognisable facets are decorative, but they also give an everyday glass a reassuring shape in the hand.
Why this particular glass?
First introduced in 1954, Picardie is a rare object that can feel both familiar and considered. The outward flare at the rim, the softly ribbed sides and the gently tapered lower half make a simple drinking glass distinctive without asking it to become a talking point. This is functional design at an unusually democratic price.

The 25 cl clear version is the one we would start with. At 250 ml it is compact enough for a short drink, water beside a meal or a modest coffee, while remaining easy to handle and store. If you routinely want a large drink with ice, the 31 cl or larger versions may suit you better.
What the material really offers
Picardie is made from tempered glass. That treatment makes it more resistant to everyday knocks and temperature changes than an ordinary thin glass, but it is not unbreakable. A hard impact or a damaged rim can still cause failure. Inspect glassware regularly and discard pieces with chips or cracks rather than trying to make them last at any cost.
The manufacturer says the glass is suitable for hot and cold drinks, dishwashers and microwaves. It is not designed for conventional ovens, direct flames or hobs. The material also remains glass: it has reassuring weight and clarity, but it can be noisier and less forgiving than plastic when carried outside.

Why it made the cut
A useful silhouette, practical care and genuine staying power as a design. The facets make the glass easy to recognise; the tempered construction is a sensible material choice for regular use; the range is broad enough to replace individual pieces or add matching sizes later. Unlike fashionable glassware that is difficult to match after a season, the Picardie design has remained recognisable for decades.
It also proves that good design need not mean paying more for unnecessary packaging or a prestige label. The attraction is not exclusivity. It is that the glass is inexpensive enough to use without ceremony and considered enough to keep.
Not for you if…
You want a large 400–500 ml tumbler, ultra-lightweight picnic drinkware, a delicate fine-rimmed wine glass, or a completely smooth cylindrical shape. The thick base and facets add character but also weight. Glass is unsuitable for some outdoor environments and can still break. If you already own serviceable drinking glasses, there is no compelling reason to replace them purely for the look.
Price and buying considerations
UK retailers list the clear 25 cl six-pack at a range of prices, and postage can exceed the cost of the glasses. For example, Cooksmill lists a six-pack at £7.74 including VAT before delivery, while Argos lists a six-pack at £15.99 (prices checked 25 October 2026; stock and delivery vary). Compare the delivered total, not just the headline price. A single chipped replacement is usually a better purchase than another full set.
The Curio verdict
Curio Score: 8.9/10 — editorial assessment. Design 9.3; craftsmanship 8.7; practicality 9.1; originality 8.9; value 9.3; giftability 8.1. These are qualitative judgements, not independent laboratory test results.
There are more delicate glasses and more extravagant glasses, but the Picardie makes a compelling argument for ordinary objects that remain satisfying after the novelty has worn off. Its strongest feature is not the claim that it lasts forever. It is that there is little reason to stop using it while it remains in good condition.
